Our journey has begun! We received our trout eggs from the Peaquest Hatchery, thanks to the Trout in the Classroom program from the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, and its partner, Trout Unlimited.
We received our shipment of eggs (see if you can tell how many we have from the picture below). You'll notice that four of the eggs are dark white. This means that they are not viable. Our fourth graders will be monitoring the eggs each morning and removing any bad ones so that they don't bring fungus to the other eggs.
We will be raising rainbow trout from now until June, when we release them. They should start hatching sometime this week or next. When they hatch, they'll still have the egg on their stomach, it is called a yolk sac and is where they will get their food. Take a look at the eggs below and see if you can find their eyes and spines.
Each morning, our fourth graders will test the pH and Ammonia in the water in both our trout tank and our tropical tank. We will use our Amazon themed tropical fish tank to help us compare and contrast. Through both tanks, we'll have a real, hands-on, opportunity to learn about Geography, Biology, Chemistry, observation, writing, collaborating and much more.
We hope that you enjoy the journey with us! We'll keep you updated regularly through our Bear Tavern Trout blog.
